Press Release

UK'S OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS (OFCOM) APPROVES UWB USE WITHIN THE UNITED KINGDOM EFFECTIVE 13 AUGUST 2007

Germantown, MD – August 6, 2007 – The United Kingdom's Office of Communications ("OFCOM") is the first agency to issue regulations for the unlicensed use of ultra wideband (UWB) technology within Europe. By European Commission (EC) mandate, all 27 Member States must have such regulations in place by 16 August 2007.

The UK UWB regulation is referred to as the "Wireless Telegraphy (Ultra-Wideband Equipment) (Exemption) Regulations 2007. The full text of these regulations can be found at

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2007/20072084.htm.

Major features of the OFCOM UWB regulations include:

  • Frequency of operation must be either 6.0-8.5 GHz (without any duty cycle limitation) or 4.2-4.8 GHz (with several constraints on transmission duty cycle);

  • Equipment can be used both indoors and outdoors (outdoor use cannot deploy a fixed installation or infrastructure); and,

  • Transmitter power in these bands is limited to 0 dBm/50 MHz (peak) and -41.3 dBm/MHz (average).

"We are extremely pleased with the OFCOM announcement," stated Dr. Robert Fontana, MSSI President. "These regulations dovetail nicely with the FCC's regulations for UWB operation in the 3.1-10.6 (Subpart F) and 5.925-7.25 GHz bands (Subpart C), providing up to 2.5 GHz of common spectrum for a wide variety of UWB applications."
